Paulien en Arjen trouwde op een unieke plek midden in het bos. Hun liefde voor elkaar is ontzettend sterk en dit wilde ze graag bezegelen met een prachtige ring en een heerlijk feest. Erika en Gerbert van In beeld met floor hebben deze ontzettend mooie bruiloft perfect vastgelegd. Een ‘enchanted forest’ gevoel, donkere tinten, veel details en een eigen gemaakte jurk. Wij waren op slag verliefd!
Can you tell us how you met each other?
We met while studying in the same small town. He came and two friends came by the house I was living in at the time. I knew his name, but didn’t know him personally. And I didn’t really get to know him that evening either, I just remember him sitting there quietly, looking at me from across the room. A few weeks later he approached me at a party, kidnapped me to the garden and we talked for hours. At the end of it we made a bet; if I won, he would have to come up with a date, if he won, I would have to. I won, and he took me to an open air concert. We danced and talked all night and I remember thinking: I’ve never met anyone this sincere, and open.
What is your engagement story?
We met while studying in a small town. Arjen was about to graduate, and I was just beginning. After 4 years of qa distance relationship, we finally moved in together, and a few months later I went out for drinks with my girlfriends. It was all brilliantly set up though: half way through the evening one of my girlfriends told the whole group we had to go and look at the canals, not wanting to say what for. We were standing on a bridge overlooking the canals, and I remember thinking: this is so pretty and romantic, when I saw a small boat approaching. It was Arjen, in a boat filled with roses and candles. He took me with him, and while we were rowing through the canals, loving the warm air and all the lights against the dark sky, he asked me to marry him.
What means marriage to you?
I never dreamed about big weddings and happily ever after. Maybe because I wasn’t sure happily ever after existed. It was during our relationship, and thinking that I might want to spend the rest of my life with him, that I realised we don’t really have a lot of good examples of happy marriages. So I decided to interview 100 couples happily married for over 40 years, to know what I would get myself into, and to show myself and others that happily ever after does exist. Because of it, marriage got a whole new meaning for me. Warm, connected, loving and absolutely, totally worth it. Being married, for me, really adds something to being with him. When you get into a relationship, you base your choice on what you hope the relationship will be like. When you marry, you already know him, and to then make the choice again that you want to spend forever with them, is awesome.
Wedding Location
We knew right away we wanted to get married outside, in the woods, in the dark. I just had this vision of us standing beneath the trees with a million twinkling lights. So we chose a really beautiful campground in the middle of an old forest. The campground had a big loghouse on it, which was perfect to get together with family on the friday evening, the day prior. We also wanted everyone to be able to sleep there, and have a really big party. This was pretty much the only venue where that was possible, and it was so gorgeous. It was a no-brainer, really.
Theme/ Style
Bohemian like, and very relaxed. I spent a lot of time on pinterest, that really helped.
Photography
Erika Floor, from ‘In beeld met Floor‘ was our photographer. We started out not really wanting a photographer. We both had this assumption that it would be really stiff portrait pictures, and we weren’t really up for that. But then I saw this picture of a bride on my Facebook feed and I was mesmerized. So I clicked on it and found out it was Erika’s. Then we decided, if wedding pictures can be this pretty, we need her.
Film
Erika’s husband Gerbert was our videographer and it was awesome to have them both around for the day. They are just really, really good at what they do and very sweet people. The film turned out amazing. Everytime we watch it we see new things. It really captures the feeling of the day.

A memorable moments
Bride: I will never forget the look on his face when he turned around to see me for the first time. I really would never have thought he would be taken so much by surprise, and seeing the look of endearment on his face, and the tears in his eyes, made me all fuzzy inside and full of love. Groom: The most memorable moment for me was when I turned around and saw her for the first time. What led up to this moment was reading her letter, which was touching and loving, and put me into an eager and tender mood. While I waited on a sunny spot in the forest, it took everything in me not to turn around when I heard Paulien walking towards me. When I finally did, I was taken by surprise, and emotions rushed over me: she looked so absolutely gorgeous that it astounded me. It felt like her dress, and she, were both so perfectly made for me.
Honeymoon
We went to Sardegna, because we both love Italy!
One thing I whish I knew before I started my wedding plans?
I had no expectations, and that was a good thing. Therefore we were very flexible with everything, so there weren’t any big surprises really.
What is your advice for a couple with wedding plans?
Really make this a day about you two. Don’t let traditions and family members direct you too much in what you should or shouldn’t do. Also, do not stress. Whatever goes wrong, will be a fun story in the end. Start in time with DIY projects, and really think whether or not they are feasible, because they always take more time than you think. There is always a more efficient way to do something equally awesome. And, prepare to discover how amazing your friends can be! Always ask for help, most of them are very willing to.
